Do we need changelogs & release notes?

I’ve been thinking about how we can improve our changelogs & release notes recently, as a team we have thought about automating them in the past.

The discussion below, brought up the question of whether they are necessary or worthwhile at all?

This gave me the inspiration of having a GitHub category on our new forum so we can openly discuss organisation wide practices on GitHub and perhaps thoughts about specific repos that could get lost in mass of issues and PRs.

So first of all, I want to establish whether people want changelogs & release notes or not? Feel free to comment below if you have specific thoughts or experiences you want to share.

  • Yes, as is (maybe with some styling changes).
  • Yes, but for security fixes & breaking changes only.
  • No, not at all.

@Arthur I think it’s clear that people do want/use changelogs and release notes in there current form. So I’d say we should keep them but definitely look at automation so that its not so time-consuming!

I will open another topic to weigh up the pros and cons of different automation methods soon.
